Pre-Trip in Winter

Extra items to check:

  • Antifreeze levels
  • Battery condition
  • Air dryer working
  • Wiper blades/fluid
  • Tire chains available
  • DEF not frozen

Braking and Stopping

Increased Distances

  • 3-4x normal stopping distance on ice
  • Start braking earlier
  • Use engine braking more
  • ABS helps but isn’t magic

Black Ice

  • Most dangerous in early morning
  • Bridges freeze first
  • Watch shaded areas
  • If you hit it, don’t panic

Chain Requirements
