Drove for Werner for about 18 months before going O/O. Here’s my honest take:
Pay: Started around 52 CPM after training, got bumped to 56 after a year. Not the best out there, but consistent miles. They do have a decent bonus structure if you hit their safety metrics.
Home time: OTR was roughly every 2-3 weeks for 2-3 days. They were pretty good about honoring requests if you gave them enough notice. Regional was better if that’s available in your area.
Equipment: Mixed bag. Some trucks were newer Freightliners that were solid, others were older and had issues. Maintenance was responsive though - never felt unsafe.
DOT compliance: This is actually where they were strong. Very by-the-book on hours, pre-trip inspections, drug testing - the whole deal. Never felt pressured to run illegal. Their safety department was on top of things.
Overall - solid company for getting experience and building your record. Not a “forever” company for most drivers, but good training and they don’t cut corners on compliance. That matters when you’re building your career.
Drove for Werner back in the early 2000s for about 3 years. Can’t speak to how they are now, but back then they had good equipment and decent miles. The training program was solid for the time.
Main complaint was the typical mega-carrier stuff - sometimes felt like a number rather than a driver. But they got me started and I learned a lot. Would recommend for someone just starting out who needs training.
My nephew drove for Werner last year. Said the pay was competitive for a first-year driver and the benefits were decent. His main gripe was getting stuck with loads that kept him out longer than expected.
But that’s the mega-carrier life, ain’t it? You trade flexibility for stability when you’re starting out. He’s since moved to a regional gig but doesn’t regret starting there.
