What Really Happens After a Failed Drug Test - The RTD Process Explained

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room. Failed drug tests happen. Here’s what the process actually looks like:

Step 1: Immediate Removal
You’re pulled from safety-sensitive duties immediately. No driving. Not negotiable.

Step 2: Reported to Clearinghouse
Within 3 business days, your employer reports the violation. It stays on your record.

Step 3: Find a SAP
You need a DOT-qualified Substance Abuse Professional. Not just any counselor - specifically DOT-qualified.

Step 4: Complete Treatment
Whatever the SAP recommends - classes, counseling, program - you do it. All of it.

Step 5: SAP Follow-Up
Go back to the SAP. They verify completion and decide if you’re ready.

Step 6: Return-to-Duty Test
Observed collection. Must be negative. No exceptions.

Step 7: Follow-Up Testing
Minimum 6 unannounced tests over 12 months. Can extend up to 60 months.

The Truth:

  • Process takes 2-6 months minimum
  • It costs money (SAP, treatment, testing)
  • But it IS possible to get back on the road
  • Many drivers have done it successfully

Thank you for posting this. I didn’t even know what a SAP was before reading this.

Quick question - how do you find a DOT-qualified SAP? Is there a directory or something? And roughly how much does the whole RTD process cost?

Just want to be informed in case I ever need to help someone going through this.
