What Happens After a Positive Drug Test? The RTD Process Explained

Got a positive test or know someone who did? Here’s the complete return-to-duty (RTD) process.

Immediate Consequences

  1. Removed from safety-sensitive duties immediately
  2. Violation reported to Clearinghouse within 3 days
  3. Cannot drive commercially until RTD is complete

The SAP Process

You must work with a DOT-qualified SAP (Substance Abuse Professional):

  1. Initial evaluation - SAP assesses your situation
  2. Treatment/education - Complete prescribed program
  3. Follow-up evaluation - SAP determines if you’re ready
  4. Return-to-duty test - Must be negative
  5. Follow-up testing - Minimum 6 tests in first year

Timeline

  • Minimum: 2-3 months (rare)
  • Typical: 4-6 months
  • Complex cases: 6-12+ months

Cost Estimates

  • SAP evaluations: $400-800
  • Treatment programs: $500-5,000+
  • Follow-up tests: $50-100 each

Getting Back on the Road

After completing RTD:

  • Your violation is still visible for 5 years
  • Employers will see it but also see you completed RTD
  • Some companies hire RTD drivers, others don’t
