Surviving a Level 1 DOT Inspection: The Complete Checklist

Level 1 is the most thorough inspection. Here’s how to be prepared.

What is a Level 1?

Per CVSA standards:

  • Full inspection of driver AND vehicle
  • Takes 45-60+ minutes
  • Most comprehensive inspection level

Driver Items Checked

Have these ready:

  • Valid CDL
  • Medical certificate (current)
  • Driver’s daily log (or ELD)
  • Previous 7 days of logs
  • Vehicle registration
  • Proof of insurance (cab card)
  • Shipping papers/manifest
  • HazMat docs (if applicable)

Vehicle Items Inspected

The inspector will check:

Brakes

  • Brake adjustment
  • Air system leaks
  • Brake lining condition
  • ABS function

Tires

  • Tread depth (4/32" steer, 2/32" others)
  • Inflation
  • Damage/wear patterns

Lights

  • All lights working
  • Clean and visible
  • Reflectors/reflective tape

Coupling Devices

  • Fifth wheel condition
  • Glad hands sealed
  • Safety chains (if applicable)

Other

  • Mirrors/windshield
  • Wipers/defrosters
  • Horn
  • Fluid leaks
  • Frame/suspension
