Let’s be real - trucking isn’t exactly a health-friendly profession. Long hours sitting, limited food options, irregular sleep… it’s tough. But I’ve been collecting tips from drivers who’ve managed to turn it around, and wanted to share what actually works.
The Sitting Problem
We sit for 10-14 hours a day. Here’s what helps:
- Get out and walk during your 30-minute break - even 10 minutes helps
- Do some stretches at fuel stops (nobody’s watching, I promise)
- Consider a seat cushion that promotes better posture
- Park further away at truck stops and walk
Food on the Road
This is where most of us struggle:
- Invest in a 12V cooler - game changer for keeping healthy food fresh
- Stock up at grocery stores instead of truck stops
- Protein is your friend: deli meat, cheese, boiled eggs, nuts
- Avoid the fried stuff at truck stop restaurants (I know, easier said than done)
Sleep Quality
- Black out curtains are worth every penny
- White noise apps can drown out lot noise
- Try to keep a consistent sleep schedule when possible
- Limit caffeine after 2pm
Exercise That Actually Works
- Resistance bands take up no space and give a real workout
- YouTube has tons of trucker-specific workout videos
- Some drivers do push-ups and squats at every fuel stop
- Walking laps around the truck stop parking lot
Mental Health Matters Too
- Stay connected with family via video calls
- Audiobooks and podcasts help pass the time
- Some drivers meditate during their breaks
- Don’t be afraid to talk to someone if you’re struggling
What are your tips for staying healthy out there? Would love to hear what works for you.
