The sleeper berth provision gives you options. Here’s how to use it effectively.
Basic Sleeper Berth Rules
Per FMCSA regulations:
Split Sleeper Option
You can split your 10-hour break into two periods:
- One period of at least 7 hours in sleeper berth
- One period of at least 2 hours (sleeper, off-duty, or combo)
How the Math Works
The 7+ hour sleeper period:
- Doesn’t count against 14-hour window
- Pauses your clock
The 2+ hour period:
- Also doesn’t count against 14-hour
- More flexibility on where/when
Practical Examples
Example 1: Long Day Split
- Drive 5 hours
- 2 hours off-duty (dinner/break)
- Drive 6 more hours
- 7 hours sleeper berth
- Resume driving
Example 2: Maximize Drive Time
- 7 hours sleeper overnight
- Drive 8 hours
- 3 hours sleeper (afternoon nap)
- Drive 3 more hours
Common Mistakes
- Not meeting minimum time requirements
- Confusing sleeper berth with off-duty
- Not properly logging split periods
Pro Tips
- Use the split when parking is available mid-route
- Great for avoiding traffic in major metros
- Takes practice to master the timing
