Random testing catches a lot of drivers off guard. Know what to expect.
How Random Selection Works
Per FMCSA requirements:
- Selection must be truly random (computer-generated)
- Testing rate: 50% for drugs, 10% for alcohol
- You can be selected multiple times in a year
- You can go years without being selected
When You’re Notified
- Notification is immediate - no advance warning
- Must proceed to collection site immediately
- “Immediately” means within a reasonable time (usually 2-4 hours max)
Can You Refuse?
You CAN refuse, but:
- Refusal = Same consequences as positive test
- Gets reported to Clearinghouse
- Career-ending for most
Common Situations
“I can’t go right now because…”
- Load deadline: Not a valid excuse
- Far from collection site: Employer must accommodate
- Bathroom issues (shy bladder): Procedures exist for this
Prescription medications:
- Take the test
- Inform MRO of valid prescriptions afterward
Consortium/Pool Requirements
Owner-operators must be in a random testing consortium. No exceptions.
