A solid pre-trip can save your life and your career. Here’s the complete routine.

Why Pre-Trips Matter

Per FMCSA regulations:

  • Required before driving each day
  • Must complete DVIR (Driver Vehicle Inspection Report)
  • Violations can result in fines and CSA points

The Systematic Approach

Front of Vehicle

  • Headlights (high/low)
  • Turn signals
  • Clearance/marker lights
  • Windshield condition
  • Wipers and fluid
  • Mirrors (both sides)

Engine Compartment

  • Oil level
  • Coolant level
  • Power steering fluid
  • Belts and hoses
  • Leaks under vehicle

Driver Side

  • Door and mirrors
  • Fuel tank secure
  • Tires (pressure, tread, damage)
  • Wheel lugs torqued

Rear of Tractor

  • Frame and suspension
  • Air lines and electrical
  • Fifth wheel locked
  • Sliding mechanism secured

Trailer

  • Landing gear up
  • Brakes and tires
  • Lights and reflectors
  • Doors secured
  • Load secured (if accessible)

In-Cab

  • All gauges working
  • Air pressure building
  • Brake test (air loss check)
  • ELD/paperwork ready
  • Safety equipment present

Time Investment

  • Minimum: 15-20 minutes
  • Thorough: 30-45 minutes
