Pre-Employment Drug Testing: What Happens Before You Get Hired

Applying for trucking jobs? Here’s exactly what to expect with drug testing.

The Process

  1. Conditional job offer - Company offers you position pending tests
  2. Clearinghouse query - They check your federal record
  3. Drug test - Must be completed before you drive
  4. Results - Usually within 24-72 hours
  5. Final hiring decision - Based on all results

Clearinghouse Pre-Employment Query

Per FMCSA rules:

  • Employer MUST run full query
  • You MUST provide electronic consent
  • If violation found, cannot be hired until RTD complete

What If You Have a Prior Violation?

  • Completed RTD? You may still be hired (company dependent)
  • RTD in progress? Cannot be hired until complete
  • Recent violation? Many companies have 3-5 year policies

Previous Employer Checks

Companies must also investigate your last 3 years:

  • Drug/alcohol test history from prior employers
  • Any violations or refusals
  • This is SEPARATE from Clearinghouse

Pro Tips for Job Seekers

  1. Know your Clearinghouse status before applying
  2. Be honest on applications
  3. Have documentation ready if you completed RTD
  4. Some carriers specialize in second-chance hiring

Good luck out there!
