When I first started driving, I bought a bunch of stuff I thought I needed. Some of it I’ve never touched. Here’s what I actually use on a daily basis after a year on the road.
Cab Comfort Essentials
- Quality mattress topper - your back will thank you
- 12V cooler (not a cheap one - invest in a good Dometic or similar)
- Blackout curtains - essential for day sleeping
- Good pillow - don’t cheap out here either
- Portable fan for air circulation
Safety Gear
- LED flashlight (I use mine almost daily)
- Reflective vest - required at many shippers/receivers
- Work gloves for tarping/chains
- Safety glasses
- Fire extinguisher (check expiration regularly)
Tools You’ll Need
- Tire pressure gauge (the built-in ones aren’t always reliable)
- Basic tool kit: wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers
- Tire thumper
- Bungee cords and ratchet straps
- Duct tape (fixes everything temporarily)
- Glad hand seals (they fail at the worst times)

- Inverter for charging devices
- Dash cam (protects you legally)
- GPS designed for trucks (NOT Google Maps)
- Portable toilet for emergencies
- Shower bag/caddy for truck stop showers
Things I Thought I’d Need But Didn’t
- Fancy coffee maker (truck stop coffee is fine)
- Microwave (takes up too much space, rarely used it)
- Full bedding set (a good sleeping bag works better)
Money-Saving Tips
- Buy quality the first time - cheap stuff breaks
- Check out trucker-specific stores for deals
- Ask other drivers what brands they trust
- Keep receipts for tax deductions
