DOT Physical Requirements
Your medical examiner’s certificate must be:
- From an FMCSA-registered medical examiner
- Valid (typically 2 years, but can be less based on health conditions)
- On file with your state DMV

What Happens If It Expires?
- Your CDL becomes downgraded automatically
- You cannot legally operate a CMV
- May need to retake skills test to reinstate (state dependent)
Tips
- Set a reminder 60 days before expiration
- Keep copies of your medical card in your truck AND at home
- Update your state DMV promptly after renewal
