Getting Your Own Authority - What's the Real Cost?

Thinking about getting my own authority instead of staying leased to a carrier. Need some real numbers from those who’ve done it.

What I’m trying to figure out:

  • MC number application cost
  • Insurance requirements (what’s realistic?)
  • DOT drug testing consortium costs
  • UCR, IFTA, IRP - what am I looking at annually?
  • Any hidden costs nobody warned you about?

Been driving for 5 years, have my own truck paid off. Want to make sure I’m prepared before making the jump.

What was your total startup cost? And would you do it again? :money_bag:

Been running under my own authority for 3 years now. Here’s what I paid when I started (2023 numbers, may be slightly different now):

Upfront costs:

  • MC number application: $300 (FMCSA filing fee)
  • BOC-3 process agent: $30-50/year
  • Insurance (liability + cargo): This is the big one. Started around $12,000/year with a clean record. New authority = higher rates for first 2 years.

Annual recurring:

  • UCR: ~$100 (depends on fleet size)
  • IFTA: Filing is free, but you need to track fuel and pay quarterly
  • IRP: Varies by state, I paid about $1,800 for my base state + apportioned registration
  • Drug testing consortium: $150-300/year for random pool membership
  • 2290 Heavy Vehicle Use Tax: $550/year

Hidden costs nobody warned me about:

  • ELD subscription: $20-40/month
  • Factoring fees if you use them: 2-5% per load
  • Permits for oversize/overweight if you do that work
  • Accounting software or bookkeeper: $100-300/month
  • Downtime for inspections, breakdowns, compliance stuff

Total first year: I’d budget $20-25K minimum, and have 3 months operating expenses saved.

Worth it? Absolutely. But go in with eyes open. The freedom is real, but so is the responsibility.

For the drug testing consortium, shop around - there are affordable options out there. Vertical Identity has competitive rates for O/Os if you’re looking.
