FMCSA Clearinghouse 101: Everything New Drivers Need to Know

If you’re new to trucking or just got your CDL, understanding the Clearinghouse is critical. Let me break it down.

What is the Clearinghouse?

The FMCSA Drug & Alcohol Clearinghouse is a federal database that tracks drug and alcohol violations for CDL holders.

Who Has Access?

  • Employers - Must query before hiring and annually
  • You - Can check your own record anytime (free)
  • FMCSA/Law enforcement - For safety oversight

What Gets Reported?

  1. Positive drug tests
  2. Positive alcohol tests (0.04+ BAC)
  3. Refusals to test
  4. Return-to-duty status

Why It Matters

A violation stays on your record for 5 years. During that time, every trucking company will see it when they run your pre-employment query.

Pro Tips

  • Register NOW at clearinghouse.fmcsa.dot.gov
  • Check your own record periodically
  • Understand that marijuana is still federally illegal - even in legal states
