Entry Level Driver Training (ELDT): What Changed and Why

ELDT requirements changed everything for new CDL drivers. Here’s what you need to know.

What is ELDT?

Since February 2022, FMCSA requires formal training for:

  • First-time CDL applicants
  • CDL upgrades (Class B to A)
  • Adding HazMat, passenger, or school bus endorsements

Training Requirements

Theory Training

  • Curriculum set by FMCSA
  • Covers regulations, safety, vehicle systems
  • Must pass knowledge assessment

Behind-the-Wheel Training

  • Range training: Basic maneuvers
  • Public road training: Real driving
  • No minimum hours (competency-based)
  • Trainer determines when ready

Finding a Training Provider

Must use FMCSA-registered provider:

Training Costs

Wide range:

  • Company-sponsored: Free (with commitment)
  • Private schools: $3,000-10,000+
  • Community colleges: $2,000-5,000

After Training

Provider submits completion to FMCSA registry:

  1. Training provider certifies completion
  2. Results in Training Provider Registry
  3. State DMV can verify before testing
  4. You take CDL skills test

What ELDT Doesn’t Cover

  • Specific company procedures
  • Real-world experience
  • Advanced maneuvers
  • Regional/industry-specific knowledge

That’s why most companies still have their own training after ELDT.
