Been driving since '86 and the parking situation has never been this bad. But after 4 decades, I’ve learned a few tricks.
What Actually Works:
Timing is everything. I start looking for parking by 4pm at the latest. Yeah, I know that cuts into driving time, but sitting in a rest area at midnight burning fuel isn’t making money either.
The rural route advantage. I avoid the big truck stops on I-80 and I-40 when possible. Smaller county roads often have mom-and-pop stops with plenty of space.
Build relationships. I’ve got about a dozen shippers/receivers who let me park overnight. Took years to build those connections, but worth every minute.
Apps I actually use:
- Trucker Path (most accurate crowd-sourced info)
- Park My Truck (shows real-time availability at some locations)
Spots most drivers overlook:
- CAT scale lots
- Grain elevators (ask permission)
- Industrial parks (weekends)
- Some Cabela’s/Bass Pro shops still allow it
Places I AVOID:
- Rest areas after dark in certain states (you know the ones)
- Walmart (most have banned trucks now)
- Anywhere without lighting
What’s working for y’all? The young drivers especially need our help with this one.
